June’s Good News | | Tuesday, June 1, 2010 "Winding down" the school year? Not a chance! Our students and staff are as active as ever, and fully engaged in learning as this year comes to a close. Read on for more local celebrity news...
We're in the middle of "field trip" season, and this year's destinations include: the Boston Museum of Science, the Echo Center in Burlington, Granby Zoo, the Montshire Museum, Mystery Hill (America's Stonehenge), Rock of Ages Quarry, Squam Lakes Science Center, and various walking field trips to St. Johnsbury attractions. These excursions are curriculum-related, and provide a more hands-on, in-depth experience for students of all ages, as well as an opportunity to travel outside of the Northeast Kingdom, expanding their geographic and cultural horizons. Many thanks to our staff, and to parent chaperones/drivers who make these trips possible. Please check back for photos in the coming weeks. Our 4th and 5th graders took a special trip to Montpelier, as classmate Brianna Gingue was recognized for having won the RCT poster contest for Caledonia County. She and her classmates met Governor Douglas, from whom Brianna received her award.
Governor Jim Douglas was glad to sign RCT t-shirts for excited and appreciative Good Shepherd students.
Other culminating activities this month include the final 6th grade Geography Fair (Asia), Biomes (Grades 1 - 5), French cafes and projects, and our annual Spring Concert.

7th and 8th graders welcomed author Reeve Lindbergh into their classes as they've been working on a special language arts project, writing children's books. Ms. Lindbergh shared examples of her own writing, and offered insight and advice to students as they try on their "author" hats!
Speaking of student authors... our 5th graders have composed and compiled a book of their poetry on which they have worked on this spring. To purchase your own copy hot off the press, you may visit: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/poets-of-the-future/11178826 The cost of Poets of the Future is $5.96 plus shipping, and you find that the book is full of enlightening and entertaining poetry - enjoy!
Our 7th and 8th grade students are getting ready to participate in the Relay for Life, to be held on Saturday, June 12th. Walking/running as "Eli's Angels," they have coordinated service projects to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, and will proudly represent Good Shepherd for the 3rd consecutive year at this special event.
This is a bittersweet time for our 8th grade students, as they prepare for their Graduation Mass, which will be held on Friday, June 11th at 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. This Mass is a very special Good Shepherd tradition, honoring our graduates, recognizing their gifts, talents, and accomplishments, and blessing them as they head out into the world of high school and beyond. All are welcome to join in the celebration of Mass and Graduation.
Speaking of Good Shepherd graduates... we are delighted for, and unspeakable proud of GSCS graduate Audrey Woods, who has been named Valedictorian of the St. Johnsbury Academy Class of 2010! Audrey exeplified scholarship, leadership, high personal standards, and Christian values during her Good Shepherd years, and has obviously built on this foundation as she rose to the top of her class in high school . This is the second consecutive year that a Good Shepherd graduate has been the SJA Valedictorian, with Audrey following James Ryan, who was honored last year. We at Good Shepherd are proud to have been a part of their education, and they, along with their families are to be congratulated for their outstanding academic and personal accomplishments.

Good Shepherd Catholic School offers "excellence in education and faith in every child," and continues to thrive, thanks to the quality of our students and families, as well as the generosity of our many friends and benefactors. Our school family continues to grow, with over 160 students already enrolled for the upcoming year. Several classes are near or at capacity, and waiting lists have been established. If you, or someone you know, is considering a Good Shepherd education for your/their child/ren, we encourage you to contact the school as soon as possible for information about our enrollment process.
