May Good News | | Monday, May 3, 2010 May is a month to count our blessings, and celebrate our many gifts from God...

On Sunday, May 2nd, our 2nd Grade students received their First Holy Communion, joining the greater faith community in the celebration of the Eucharist. Congratulations to our students, and special thanks to 2nd Grade teacher, Mrs. Frechette, for helping to prepare her class for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion this year. GSCS will host a Mothers Day lunch on Friday, May 7th, and our Early Ed students will host a Mothers Day Tea on Wednesday, May 12th. We love our moms and are happy to have them join us at these yearly events. (shown here are some happy GSCS moms enjoying their children's company, along with the lovely refreshments prepared by the class.)

In Alumni News... Congratulations to Audrey Woods (GSCS '06) who has been named Valedictorian of the St. Johnsbury Academy Class of 2010! Audrey exemplified scholarship, leadership, high personal standards, and Christian values during her Good Shepherd years, and has obviously built on this foundation as she rose to the top of her class in high school. Several GSCS grads were recently inducted into the St. Johnsbury Academy chapter of the National Honor Society, having been recognized for academic achievement, personal conduct, leadership and service to their school and community. Congratulations to all of these students and their families who continue to support their efforts and encourage their talents.
Rosalee Stinehour and Caleigh Cross, GSCS grads and recent Academy NHS inductees, returned to their alma mater, performing as part of the "Bells Angels" handbell choir. GSCS soon-to-be grad, Keaton Cross also plays in the ensemble which is sponsored by the Academy and South Church. Students in grades 5 - 8 are welcome to join next year!
Each year, the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club generously gives each of our 3rd and 4th graders a student reference book; 3rd graders, a dictionary, and 4th graders, an atlas. Students use these in school, and at home, and for years to come, many using them well through middle school. The 3rd graders shown here are appreciative and excited about their books!

GSCS has received a Welch's Garden Grant, sponsored by the National Gardening Association and Scholastic! 7th /8th grade science teacher Carolynne Achilles has already begun to set up the indoor garden equipment, and the seeds that students have planted are sprouting as we speak. The equipment included trays and tools, soil, seeds, markers, and more. It is a great opportunity to get a little greener with hands-on, curricular activities, and to share the harvest next fall.

Speaking of greening up, our third graders recently took to the streets of St. J to make our world a little more beautiful by cleaning up trash and debris from the Main St./ Maple St./Cherry St. area, as well as the parking lot, playground and recreation field at the Fr. Lively Center. They worked hard, enjoyed the fresh air, and displayed their committment to being good stewards of God's earth. St. Johnsbury Academy basketball legend Henry “Bruce” Dalrymple, star player at the Academy and Georgia Tech University, returned to St. Johnsbury, addressing Academy students prior to his induction into the Vermont Principals Association Hall of Fame. He also made a surprise visit to Good Shepherd, where he was greeted by 5th - 8th graders who had the opportunity to hear Dalrymple speak about his life and experiences, on and off the court. Excited students lined up for autographs, offering paper, t-shirts, or even their sneakers for a signature!

We pray everyday. Really. We pray for people we know, and for those we may not know, but who we know are in need of our prayers. These past few weeks, we have been keeping Mrs. Hartwell's brother, Larry Donna, in prayer as he recovers from a stroke. He continues to make progress, improving every day. Larry and his co-workers at the State of Vermont were recently recognized by Governor Douglas for their accomplishments in the rail division. Unable to attend the award ceremony, Larry's nephew, GSCS 6th grader Chris Hartwell, stepped right up to receive the award from the governor. Faith and family... now that's something to celebrate! May is a very busy month here at GSCS, and we encourage you to check the announcements and the Calendar/Events page on a regular basis. Field trips, Spring Concert, PTG Rummage Sale, Graduation, and more special events are coming right up and we hope to see many of you here!
Check back for more photos in the coming weeks - always plenty of smiling faces to be found!
