February Good News | | Friday, February 5, 2010 As we head through winter, February brings us many ways to come together and celebrate... Early Ed students enjoyed the "Praise & Pep" Rally during Catholic Schools Week 2010 Catholic Schools Week was a real celebration of how Catholic education provides "Dividends for Life." Our area parishes (including St. Rose of Lima in Littleton, NH!) were graced by the presence and service of many of our GSCS students, who attended in uniform, and served in various ministries on Sunday, January 31st.
GSCS students learned about what Catholic schools were like many years ago, from special guests - their own family! (left) Dylan Villeneuve shared time with his great-grandfather Philip, and great uncle, Bill, and learned about their years at St. Gabriel's School. (right) Caitlin Haggett saw photos of her great grandparents, who were among the founders of Notre Dame school, where her grandmother Marie Hagan attended classes.
On Monday, we celebrated our 3rd annual Community Breakfast with 30+ guests in attendance, and enjoyed a special address from GSCS founder and Good Shepherd Foundation director, Deacon Bernier Mayo. Tuesday was a day all about our students, who dressed casually, and enjoyed some special surprises including a beautiful and delicious cake made by Sherry Sylvain. Students enjoyed celebrating 100th Day with the "100th Day Queen" herself, GSCS Principal, Karen Haskins On Wednesday, students accented their blue and white uniforms with red to show their patriotism. Members of the Boy and Girl Scout communities proudly wore their scout uniforms to school and Mass as well. Students and staff formed a "human food chain," passing canned food items collected on Tuesday from the kitchen, through the gym, up the stairs, through the parking lot, where they were loaded into Mrs. Haskin's car to be brought to the St. Johnsbury Food Shelf. This was a first for us, and although it was simply a lot of fun and a great service project, the students found ways to incorporate math, reading, and phys ed into the activity as well! Students passing food items along their "human food chain." Our GSCS Scouts are always ready to serve. On Thursday morning, we heard from Deacon and Mrs. David and MaryAnn Baker, who spoke enthusiastically and inspirationally about vocations. It was a great way to start the day, considering all of the possible "callings" we may receive from God! Students wore their favorite hats, symbolizing the many "different hats" that a person may wear in his/her lifetime. Wearing many hats... Friday was a day to show appreciation for staff and volunteers, who received gift bags, and enjoyed refreshments served in a special hospitality area throughout the day. Many thanks to the PTG and volunteers who helped out in so many ways to give us another Catholic Schools Week to remember
GSCS students and staff have found many ways to keep active and warm throughout these months, including our Winter Sports program, and of course, basketball. A very special thank you to all who have coached, assisted, and organized these programs which are very labor intensive, but very meaningful to our students and families.
The 10th Annual Father/Daughter Dance will be held on Friday, February 12th - check back for photos from this very special event! We will celebrate Mardi Gras on (of course) Fat Tuesday, February 16th, and then return to school on Ash Wednesday, February 17th, beginning the day with Mass celebrated by Bishop Matano at 8:30 at St. John the Evangelist Church. All are welcome to join us as we begin the season of Lent, blessed by the presence of our Bishop.
A bit more exciting and heartwarming news from the family of GSCS '08 graduate, Regan Noyes:
Good Shepherd Catholic School fourth grader, Elizabeth Hebert will be skating a solo number in “This Town” an ice show featuring several talented figure skaters from the Northeast Kingdom. Elizabeth, age 10, is a member of The Northeast Kingdom Skating Club, and has been skating for 5 years. She is the daughter of Tyler and Kathie Hebert of Lyndonville.
The roots of figure skating run deep at The GSCS…. Elizabeth is being coached by class of 2008 alumni, Regan Noyes, who will also be performing in “This Town”. Former GSCS Principal, Bob Gessner, is also a skating enthusiast, instructor and former competitor, who offered Regan skating advice and encouragement during her time at the school.
Elizabeth and Regan will both be competing in Boston, Mass. Valentines Day at the ISI Viking competition.
“This Town” is being held at The Fenton Chester Ice Arena in Lyndonville on February 20, 2010 at 5 PM. The public is welcome to attend, admission is by donation.
Best wishes to these GSCS student-athletes - we are so proud of you both, and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you make the most of your God-given talents!
