October Highlights | | Thursday, October 1, 2009 A new month - a new season...
Now that summer has come and gone (both days...) we've turned the corner and welcome the fall season with all that it brings. October is the Month of the Rosary, so we'll begin saying a decade of the rosary during assembly each morning. October is also Respect Life Month, with the Diocese of Burlington offering and hosting many services and events meant to foster a deeper appreciation of and respect for human life at every stage.
Our school life is enriched with the opening of soccer season, giving students at all grade levels the opportunity to experience teamwork, physical fitness, and the great outdoors! All are invited and encouraged to come out and cheer on our teams - check the "Calendar/Events" page for game dates, times, and locations. Here's a glimpse of the first weeks...

Changes brought about in the weather and natural world have been a focus for our Kindergarten students, as they have been studying the life cycle of butterflies. Recently, the students went outside to experience being a caterpillar, curling up in a cocoon, then hatching into a beautiful, colorful butterfly and spreading their wings. They took flight in the park at the Fr. Lively Center, stopping only to gather nectar from the last flowers in bloom. Certainly, these are among God's most beautiful creatures!
First Graders spent a day at Windy Ridge Orchard learning all about the life and growth process of apples, then picking and enjoying the fruits of their labor! They held an "Apple Fest" back at school, where they pressed cider and had fresh apple crisp. Remember that The Kingdom Challenge will be held on Saturday, October 31st (All Hallows Eve) - same time, same place(s) as last year. The organizers are expecting an even bigger turnout, as news about this event spreads among runners near and far. (Walkers are welcome too, in the 5K race.) All proceeds from The Kingdom Challenge benefit Good Shepherd, so please consider participating in the race, or volunteering to lend support at the start/finish line, or cheer on the participants along the route. Cheering is so important, as it motivates tired runners to continue toward that finish line, and also to come back next year! Information about routes and registration may be found at: www.thekingdomchallenge.com Grandparents Day will be on Friday, November 20th this year - you should be receiving an invitation shortly, but save the date and join us for this very special annual event.
Be sure to check back for updates to this month's news, and for more photos as the month goes on.
